10 Important questions your veterinarian will ask that you should be prepared to answer

terrier dog and cat sitting on a sofa

A visit to your veterinarian doesn’t just involve your pet and the clinic staff; it includes YOU, the most important part of your pet’s health care team. The veterinarian relies on you to identify concerns about your pet’s health just as a pediatrician relies on a child’s parents.

Although you may wonder what the questions we ask have to do with your current concerns, answering them honestly and completely is essential. In fact this process (known as acquiring the history) is one of the most important parts of the visit and may help us identify your pet’s health problem.

If the person taking your pet to the veterinarian will not be able to answer these questions I recommend that you write down the answers to these questions and send them with your pet or provide a phone number where you can be reached so that we may ask these questions.

1. Any coughing, sneezing, vomiting or diarrhea?

You will be asked when does it occur (day or night or at any time), how often, the color of material produced, whether it is improving, worsening or the same.

2. Changes to appetite, water consumption or urination?

Many diseases will cause your pet to eat more or less, drink more and urinate more often. If your pet has not been finishing meals, continuously begs for food, you have been filling the water bowl more often, have noticed urinary accidents in the house (especially at night when you can not take your pet out) or have been scooping more clumps of litter these may be an indication that your pet has a medical condition. Your veterinarian will want to take a urine and blood sample as a start.

3. Are you giving any medications?

It is very important to identify ANY AND ALL medications your pet is currently receiving including preventatives, vitamins and over-the-counter products. Know the name, milligrams, how much and how often you are administering the medication. Sometimes bringing the medication with you is easiest. DO NOT withhold any information as medications your veterinarian prescribes may react with a current one potentially causing serious health problems.

4. Travel History?

Many diseases occur more commonly in specific areas of the country. If you travel to certain areas your pet may be exposed to different diseases. Also, if you are planning on traveling, your veterinarian may suggest certain preventative medications that target not only fleas but also ticks and heartworms.

5. Are there other pets in the house and do they have any medical conditions?

This is important in situations where diseases that are potentially contagious are of concern. Your veterinarian will provide tips on how to monitor your other pets for signs that they are also affected or provide treatment for your other pets.

6. Indoors only? If outdoors are they always supervised or sometimes unsupervised?

We all know that there are certain dangers that come with being outdoors. If your pet is indoors only it may help your veterinarian narrow down why your pet is sick.

7. Previous medical history?

This is a very important question as your pet may be affected by a recurrence of a previous disease or the treatments for one disease may make another disease worse.

8. Are vaccines up to date? Which have been given and when were they last given?

This question is important for many reasons. If your pet has not been properly vaccinated for a specific disease your veterinarian may be more suspicious of what is making your pet sick. Also, certain vaccinations can cause tests for that specific disease to be positive even though your pet does not have that disease.

9. What do you feed your pet and how much? Include treats and table scraps.

What you feed your pet is very important to their health. Certain diets may not be ideal for your pet’s life stage or for certain medical conditions. Also, on occasion, food recalls occur and at certain times these foods may have serious effects on your pet’s health. You or a guest may unknowingly have fed your pet a food item that is toxic to them.

10. Any other changes you have noticed or concerns you may have?

Things you bring up during this period may provide additional insight into what has been going on. Even if you think what you are about to say is unimportant or may make your veterinarian think you are crazy bring it up, you will be surprised how many times this piece of information may be the biggest clue in figuring out what’s wrong with your pet

"OM"

Let me try to explain WHAT exactly (or approximately) is this divine word ‘Om’.

We all know God is One. (Let Him be God or Lord the Omniscient, Omnipresent or Omnipotent, or Brahma, the Almighty, Allah, or Jehovah or Zoroaster)

But if I ask a Hindu … What (or Who) is God, he might say .. Brahma (or Brahman) in his ancient ‘Sanskrit Language’

If I ask a Muslim … What (or Who) is God, he might reply … Allah , in his ancient ‘Arabic language’

If I ask a Christian What (or Who) is God, he will reply Jehovah (or Yaweh) .. in Ancient ‘Hebrew language’

So God is having different names in different languages so as in different religions which originated in that particular land.

The ancient Rishis and sages of India found out a Universal Name to express the Unexplainable. ‘That’ which is the Omniscient, the Omnipotent and the Omnipresent. ‘That’ which is the Cause of this universe, which is the Creator (or the Manifestation). God.

That name should contain all the names in it. All the names and words of all the languages in this universe.

All these words or names must come out of the human mouth only - to be expressed.
Hence they took the lowest point of throat where the sound starts in the mouth as the base or starting point – when the throat is opened fully – which denotes ‘O’ …. and that point of the mouth or lips where all the sounds End – which denoted by ‘M’. Then came the word ‘Om’. All the names and sounds of the world ARE in it (in all the languages). This is verily the Universal Name for GOD, or Brahman or Allah or Jehovah…

Famous philosophers of India who propounded Advaita says the below ideas.. :

The whole of this universe has both name and form (Nama-Rupa) as its conditions of manifestation, according to Indian philosophy. Form is the outer crust of which the Name or the idea is the inner essence or kernel.

God is manifested himself as Name and Form or the universe. God has one word as its only possible symbol or name, and this is the Om. And as by no possible means of analysis can we separate the word from the idea, this Om and the Eternal Being are inseparable. And the name for that Eternal Being or God is this Om, and the Om only. And this ‘Om’ (O U M) when pronounced clearly and perfectly, may well be the generalized symbol of all possible sounds are produced in the space within the mouth beginning with the root of the tongue and ending in the lips. The throat sound is ‘O’ when its fully open at the base and the M is the last lip sound, and the U exactly represents the rolling forward of the impulse which begins at the root of the tongue till it ends in the lips. If properly pronounced, this Om will represent the whole phenomenon of sound- production, and no other word can do this; and this, therefore is the fittest symbol or word for the name for God. This is real meaning of the Om. And as the symbol can never be separated from the thing specified, the Om and the God are one and is indeed the first manifestation of divine wisdom. This Om is truly symbolic of God.
These word-symbols evolved out of the deepest spiritual perception of sages which symbolize and express as nearly as possible. And as the Om represents the Omniscient, the other names represent the differentiated views of the same Being, and they all are helpful to divine meditation and the acquisition of true knowledge.

If only (or all) the Hindus are united … nothing will happen…
If only (or all) the Christians are united …. No use…
If only (or all) the muslims are united …. Doesn’t make any difference …

Let us (all the religions of the world) try to be United… let us make the Universal Religion …

Then only there will be PEACE …

The Truth: Mean? Right? wrong?

- If your opinion of someone is not good, but you're giving an honest opinion about that person, is that mean?

- Is saying "no" to someone, mean?

- If someone wants to borrow something from you and you honestly don't want them to use it, are you wrong for telling them no? Are you wrong for letting them use it when you really didn't want to?

- Is it right to smile in a persons face when you really don't like them?

- Is it wrong to hold in your true feelings about something/someone to prevent hurting their feelings?

- Is it ok to make excuses for a lack of effort?

- If an ugly person walks up to you trying to get your phone number, is it mean to give them your number just because you don't want to be mean? Is it wrong to tell them, "I don't want to give you my number because you're not attractive to me."?

- Is it ever right to NOT tell the truth?

- What's more important to you, being honest and respected or being dishonest and liked? (If someone "respects" you, but you're not telling them the truth then that "respect" is not honest.)

Simply Complicated

A new day in my life gone waste; just don’t know how to go through with my life.
Always in my confused state of mind, trying for everything and then making a mess of it.
Just don’t know where am going and what I want from myself, unsatisfied with every effort I made to achieve the unachievable. Why is it so that I want to do everything but not even doing a single thing with perfection? Why the hell I give up just after starting to do something, why am I not clear about what I wanted to do exactly. Am I going crazy? Or am I confused or expecting more than actually I can deliver or is it something else??

Negative Mindset.. Remedies to it!!

It is too easy to get into a negative mindset which invariably leads to unhappiness and depression. To avoid being overwhelmed by negativity we need to make a conscious effort to avoid the experience. When life seems like a perpetual dark tunnel these are some suggestions to change your outlook on life.

Don’t Cherish Destructive Thoughts.

Often we don’t realise how much we subconsciously cherish negative thoughts. It may seem counter intuitive, but often a negative frame of mind occurs because we won’t let go of the negative thoughts and ideas. Sometimes the mind clings on to these thoughts with a feeling of self pity or injured pride. We don’t like the negative frame of mind, but at the same time are we consciously trying to overcome it? The problem is that if the negative thoughts go round and round in our mind they can become powerful and we lose a sense of perspective. Just make a conscious decision to ignore the negative flow of thoughts and sentiments and be persistent in these attempts.

Do You want to be Happy or Miserable?

We should feel a negative mindset is a choice. If we feel a victim to our own emotions and thoughts, nobody else will be able to help us. We should feel that by holding on to a negative frame of mind, we are inevitably choosing to be unhappy; each negative is a conscious decision to be miserable. If we really value the importance of our own inner peace and happiness, we will aspire to cultivate this through good, uplifting thoughts. Next time you feel the onset of a depressed state of mind, just ask yourself the question: Do I want to be happy or Miserable?

Spend Time With Positive People

The best antidote to negativity is simply to spend time doing positive, uplifting activities. Sometimes if we analyse and examine our own negativity it does nothing to reduce it. By engaging in useful fun activities, we forget about the reasons for our negativity; this is often the most powerful way to overcome a depressed state of mind.

Don’t Accept Negativity from Other People

We live in a world where there are no shortage of pessimists, critics and doomongers. There will always be people who can find the negative in life; but, there is no reason why we have to ascribe to their world view. For example, often in an office environment there is a negative attitude to the workplace, but, even if there are faults and limitations we don’t have to allow them to make us a negative person.

Let Go of Thoughts

If you can learn to control your thoughts, you can control the experience and emotions of life. The best antidote to negativity is learning the art of meditation. Meditation is more than just relaxation; it is a change in consciousness. We move from the limited perspective of our mind and discover an inner source of happiness.

Live in the Heart

The nature of the mind is to be suspicious and critical. If someone does 99 good things and 1 bad thing, the mind will invariably remember the bad thing. If we allow ourselves to be drawn into highlighting the mistakes of others we will invite a negative mindset. However, if we live in the heart we are not drawn to the faults of others (even if they are insignificant). It is in the heart that we can have a true sense of oneness with others, their faults seem insignificance and we can feel a sense of identity with the achievements of others.

Don’t Sit Around Doing Nothing

The worst thing for a negative frame of mind is to mope around feeling sorry for ourselves. Ruminating on our bad luck / worries / fears will not diminish them in any way. Exercise can be a powerful way to bring about a new consciousness. Negativity is often associated with boredom and lack of purpose. Stop endlessly checking emails and surfing web, look for something good to do.

Force Yourself to Think of 3 Positive Thoughts.

If you are feeling really miserable and have a low sense of self esteem, try thinking of 3 good things that you have done. At time our own mind can be our worst enemy and very self critical. It is important not to lose a sense of balance; for the various bad things we have done, we have also done some good things.

Don’t Think Anything You Wouldn’t Say in Front of People

We often think things we would never say in front of people. If you are annoyed, disappointed with someone else, imagine what you would say to them in person. Sometimes when we are with people we are forced to behave; even if we are not particularly sincere the effort to avoid negativity can help us to overcome our bad mood.

Thanks for patience reading..cheers!

How to avoid sleep while studying?

Young woman lying in bed, sleeping beside open textbook

I can still remember when I was in college, studying during exams was like hell and what used to make it worst was my falling asleep.
Exams are near and to get good grades, we decide to study for long hours. We decide that the best time to study is the night time, but we cannot stop ourselves from sleeping while we are studying. (Especially in subjects like History, Science, Biology, etc.) These subjects are too boring to keep us awake. Then we feel the need to be awake to learn the subject. So, we are in a dilemma. Let me guide you how to avoid sleep by these simple tips.

1. Sit on a chair with flat back.
2. Drink tea or coffee, whichever you like before the same.
3. Change topic if not interesting.
4. Keep all the lights on of your room.
5. Study while walking. That is, take rounds of your room and keep studying.
6. Drink water so that you have to go to bathroom every now and then. Believe me it works.
7. Try to study hard topics at high energy levels of your body, when your mind is fresh read tough subject.
8. If possible study in groups, for students who live in hostels.
9. Try to read aloud, it helps when you make sounds. If you read in your mind, there are chances that you fall asleep sooner.
10. Don’t eat a lot before studying. This makes you feel sleepy.
11. Don't eat rice before starting studying. This, too, is going to make you doze.
12. Don't study with a fan blowing in your face as it will dry out your eyes and make you fall asleep.
13. Even after trying all these tips if you feel sleepy, and then go for short ‘Cat naps’ but not more than 60 minutes, otherwise you will end up wasting your important time of study.

How to concentrate while studying

To concentrate while studying is very difficult as experienced by most of us. In order to have full concentration the following points must be taken care off.
1. Avoid cell phone
Most important but most of us don’t pay attention to this, and while studying we often get calls or messages that leads to loss of concentration.
2. Focus
Before starting take few minutes to summarize a few objectives, gather what u need and think of general strategy of accomplishment.
3. Incentives
Give yourself some incentives after completion of task e.g., a chocolate.
4. Change topics
Changing the subject you study every one or two hours for variety.
5. Take regular scheduled breaks that suit you
It’s always good to take some rest after one and at most two hours of continuous study, as our mind too needs some rest.
6. Be here now
Every time your mind kind of distracts from your studies, say ‘be here now’. Believe me it works like magic.
7. Worry or think time
Keep a fix time when you want to think about something that keeps on disturbing you.

SQ3R method of reading
It has also been seen that loss of concentration during study can also be due to wrong reading methods, so I am giving you with best reading method you all can follow.
Survey! Question! Read! Recite! Review!
1. Before reading survey the chapter
The title, headings, subheadings, captions under pictures, charts, graphs or maps.
2. Question while surveying
Like what do I already know about this subject?
3. ReadReading includes all, quadruple strength i.e. seeing, saying, hearing, and writing.
4. Recite
It’s very imp to recite what you have read and therefore marks your progress.
5. Review. It helps in building our confidence, it always give us smile on our face when we review what we have read.

Hope this article too bring some smile on your face….!!!

"History" A snapshot

The word 'History' means the study of the past and is derived from the greek word 'historia'.The Indian history is divided into three parts -- Ancient, Medieval and Modern. Overall history is divided into two parts Pre and Proto History.

Pre history

The word Prehistory has been formed of two words - Pre (Latin) which means 'before' and Greek word 'historia' which means History. the term is often used to describe the period before written history. Paul Tournal originally coined the term Pré-historique in describing the findings he had made in the caves of southern France. It came into use in French in the 1830s to describe the time before writing, and was introduced into English by Daniel Wilson in 1851.Prehistory can be said to date back to the beginning of the universe itself, although the term is most often used to describe periods when there was life on Earth; dinosaurs can be described as prehistoric animals and cavemen are described as prehistoric people.

Proto history

Protohistory refers to a period between prehistory and history, during which a culture or civilization has not yet developed writing, but other cultures have already noted its istence in their own writings. For example, in Europe, the Celts and the Germanic tribes may be considered to have been protohistoric when they began appearing in Greek and Roman texts.Protohistoric may also refer to the transition period between the advent of literacy in a society and the writings of the first historians. The preservation of oral traditions may complicate matters as these can provide a secondary historical source for even earlier events. Colonial sites involving a literate group and a non-literate group, are also studied as protohistoric situations.

"Synthetic Genomics"

World is changing so fast that it is becoming very difficult to get in pace with it.
Now people just don't see things as they are,but as they might be.Have you heard of something called as 'Synthetic Genomics',if not then please do search for it.Its science with a little twist in it.
A rebel scientist Dr. Craig Vecter who created a storm over a decade ago by first trying to patent a human gene (but failed as it was not allowed by law),and then decoding the entire human genome, in competition with the publicily funded organizations doing the same. Now Dr. Craig and colleagues have made scientific history by chemically synthesizing the total genetic material ( or genome)of a microbe called M.mycoides, and introduced it into the cell of another microbe, M.capricolum in a manner that tha transplanted synthetic genome of mycoides is given total and sole control of the host capricolum cell.

Now the question in your mind will be, what does this actually mean? Did they create artificial life?

Well, they synthesized the genome of mycoides and transplanted it into the living cell of capricolum in a manner that the genome of the latter was disabled. Some have called it 'rebooting' the genetic software of one organism into another organism, akin to talking a computer operating the Microsoft software and rebooting it with Linux.

What bodes for the future?
If one can synthesize genomics in the lab, introduce them into recipient cells and "express" their protein products, why not produce biofuels, maybe ask microbes to produce food by photosynthesis or whatever?

Here comes the twist, some worry whether such chemical creations of genome would lead to Frankensteinism- wherein a person creates a destructive agency that goes out of control, ruining the person himself.well right now, we are shooting in the dark as to what the long term benefits and long term risks will be...

Lastly to give it a touch of humour i would say it is quite possible that some day Dr Craig Vecter might become the "Microsoft of synthetic biology".

Kashmir- "The Switzerland of the East"

“If there is heaven on Earth, it is here, it is here, and it is here.”
Kashmir well known for its natural beauty and for being an issue of conflict between India and Pakistan is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Srinagar which is known to be famous for its houseboats is the capital and is the major tourist attraction all round the year, however from last few years the number of tourists rushing to this paradise have reduced but against all odds Kashmir is now once again coming to normalcy.

Kashmir has a lot to offer to its adventure loving visitors like trekking, mountaineering, skiing, paragliding, parasliding, cycling, water sports, angling, hand gliding and hot air ballooning. Houseboats are greatest attraction in Kashmir. The bewitching water-boat residences carved out of cedar wood are impressively finished with stately living rooms, drawing and dining rooms, carved wooden furniture’s, beautifully embroidered rugs and fabrics. The main idea behind the concept of a houseboat is the fact it provides a haven for those who like to spend a quite holiday, away from the noise and bustle of the cities. Most of the houseboats have all the amenities of a five star hotel. The houseboats have everything from spacious bedrooms, sun decks washrooms with the latest amenities, electricity and plumbing etc.

Srinagar, capital city of J&K, lies in close proximity to all the most beautiful valleys and monuments in Kashmir. Tourist attractions such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgham, Mughal gardens are just a few hour's drive from Srinagar. The city is home to the beautiful Dal and the Nagin lakes.
The only problem with staying in Srinagar is the fear of terrorism. Shops and restaurants start after 10am and down their shutters by 7pm. It is advisable not to venture out of your hotels before and after this time interval. Although the armed forces are a strong presence, it remains a relatively tense area.

How can i forget to tell you about Kashmiri food, even talking about Kashmiri food makes my mouth water. Kashmiri food is rich, aromatic and spicy. The flavor of Kashmiri food is due to an extensive use of cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, saffron, and lots of other such spices.
It might be served as a small family meal consisting of rajma and rice or, if you're lucky enough, as a wonderful 36-course wedding feast known as Wazawan. The regular diet of native Kashmiris is rice, the most favoured variety of which is the slightly sticky one that is grown only in Kashmir.

Non-vegetarian food is a crucial part of Kashmiri cuisine and the usual daily meal consists of vegetables and meat cooked together. The pure vegetarian meal includes chaman and dum-aloo. But, interestingly, sweets are not a regular feature of a Kashmiri meal. Kahva, or Kashmiri tea, is preferred over sweets after a meal.
Apart from these, seekh kababs, tabak maz, rogan josh, Yakhni and gushtaba are a few other mouth-watering preparations you should most definitely eat in Kashmir.

Hope you like reading about Kashmir, now pack your bags and make an unforgettable trip to place called "Heaven on Earth".

Prescription Writing

Prescription is the written order of the practitioner to the pharmacist. Which contain, the names and the quantities of drugs, methods of compounding and dispensing and method of administration of medicine. Also contains instructions relating to diet and other particulars.

Prescriptions are usually written in Latin language for the following reasons.
1. To keep some sort of secrecy.
2. To avoid self medication.
3. Latin, since dead language does not change in meaning with time and place.
4. Scientific nomenclature of plants and animals are in Latin and is names of drugs too.

Typical prescription consists of following parts.
1. Date.
2. Name and address of owner and description of animal.
3. Superscription.
4. Inscription.
5. Subscription.
6. Signature (signa).
7. Prescribers name.

1. Date: Date on which prescription is written should be put on top right hand side or along with initials of prescriber. Date on prescription will help in assessing the beginning of the treatment, interval of repeating drugs, duration of treatment especially narcotic drugs and that of dispensing. it is also important from legal point of view as it tells when the treatment has began and at what stage of disease
2. Name and address of owner and description of animal: It is important to facilitate handling and to avoid confusion among prescription meant for some other patient.
Age of patient is important particularly in case of young patient as dose is different. If the age is not mentioned then it is understood that it is for adult patient.
3. Superscription: This is written as a symbol Rx. This is derived from letters R and J. The expanded Latin word for R is ‘recipe’ means “take thou of”. This gives instructions to the pharmacist to take prescription as such (no alterations to be made). The letter J stands for an invocation of physician to the Roman god of healing Jupiter. So it means asking the Roman god Jupiter for help in making the prescription effective in cure of disease.
4. Inscription: It is the main body of prescription .It contains the name of drugs and their quantities. Abbreviations should be avoided since they are likely to results in errors. The name of each drug is placed as separate line, and first letter is capital. The inscriptions may be simple and complex.
Simple: Consists of main drug and vehicle.
Complex: If there is more than one ingredient than it is divided into four parts and they
should follow this order.
a. Basis: Main active drug of the prescription with which the disease cures.
b. Adjuvant: Agent which has a complementary effect and enhances or assists in the action of the basis.
c. Corrective: Substance which counter or modifies any undesirable action of the basis and or adjuvant.
d. Vehicle(s): It is an inert substance which converts medicine into a suitable form administration in a more pleasant way. Vehicles have the properties like 1) Increasing of bulk and diluting active ingredient 2) Act as a solvent for soluble drugs and suspends insoluble drugs 3) May mask the unpleasant odor and taste.

5. Subscription: This part contains directions to the pharmacist during compounding of drugs. It contains the form of medicine, its preparation quantity to be sent and the manner of sending, Latin abbreviations and terms are used.
6. Signature (signa): It’s a Latin word symbolized by abbreviation signa means let it be labeled. It is there for instructions to the dispenser in all details to appear on label as directions to the owner. This part is written in either in English or local language and it has to be labeled on the container of the dispensed product by the pharmacist. This usually includes method of administration, time of administration, dose and any other additional information.
7. Prescriber’s name and address: This includes initial address, qualification and registration number of the prescriber. This part makes the prescriber is responsible for any damage in health to the patient as a result of his own wrong or illegal prescription or omission of instructions.

Veterinarians

Most vets are in private practice and treat small pets like dogs, cats and birds other vets treat large animals like cows, horses and pigs, some veterinarians care for zoo aquariums or laboratory animals.
Veterinarians also work for government agencies as veterinary assistant surgeons, veterinary inspectors etc. These specialists use their skills to protect humans against diseases carried by animals. Some inspectors work in meat processing plants and slaughter houses to ensure that animal carcasses are disease free and that the plants follow proper sanitary regulations. Many vets work in animal hospitals and clinics and often travel to farms and stables to treat large animals or to inspect herds.

Veterinarians put in long hours and are often on calls in the evenings and on weekends. They run the risk of been kicked, bitten or scratched by a frightened animal. If you are thinking about becoming a vet you must need to be science student with biology as compulsory subject during your class 12th examination. Admission in an accredited veterinary college is highly competitive.

There are two options to get into a veterinary college:-
1. State level competitive entrance examination.
2. National level competitive examination conducted by Veterinary council of India (VCI)
Duration of veterinary degree is five years and after successful completion a student is awarded with a degree in Bachelors of veterinary science and animal husbandry (B.V.Sc & A.H)
The earnings potential for this job is high. Veterinarians play a major role in wellbeing of society by providing healthy meat, milk and their products and by preventing zoonotic diseases. Veterinarians are known to be the silent workers who work day and night for the public health and safety. Although animals can't say thank you, veterinarians know that their patients appreciate their care.
